Employment Law Forecast 2010

Update 62 - The Equality Bill passed its second reading in House of Lords and now is awaiting final legislation procedures and amendments.

There were many developments in employment law in 2009 with new legislation from Parliament and many important cases being decided by both domestic and international Courts. In our view the pace of change is not likely to lessen in 2010.

What Should you be Looking Out for in 2010?

Examples of important forthcoming legislation:

  • Spring 2010 – Fit notes, rather than sick notes are to be introduced by the Social Security (Medical Evidence) and Statutory Sick Pay (Medical Evidence) Amendment Regulations 2010.
  • Pre-Election 2010 – The Financial Services Bill is expected to be enacted prior to the forthcoming election, which must take place on or before 3 June 2010, barring exceptional circumstances. If enacted, the Bill will allow for greater regulation of pay and benefits in the financial sector and promote effective and responsible risk management and compliance.
  • October 2010 – The Equality Bill is expected to come into force in October 2010. We discussed the draft Equality Bill in Update 49
