Update 84 - Abolition of the Default Retirement Age has been confirmed by the goverment
Yesterday the government confirmed that the proposals to phase out the Default Retirement Age (DRA) are to be implemented, meaning employers will no longer be able to automatically dismiss their employees because they have reached the age of 65.
The DRA will be completely abolished on 1 October this year. In the interim period, notices of retirement which have been issued to employees before 6 April 2011 will still be valid except where the actual retirement date falls on or after the 1 October 2011. In order to comply with the six month notification requirement specified in the current Regulations, notices should be issued on or before 30 March 2011.
