The most recent Pensions Regulator updates provide clearer information to employers. On 30 June 2012, new laws came into force that will eventually require all UK employers to automatically enrol eligible jobholders into a qualifying pension scheme.
However, the provisions will be introduced gradually over a series of ‘staging dates’ commencing from 1 October 2012. An employer’s staging date is the date on which it will become subject to the new duties. The smaller the employer, the later the staging date will be. To ease the burden, some staging dates have now been put back so that no employer with fewer than 50 workers will be required to comply with the provisions before June 2015.
Details about staging dates are available by checking the staging dates timeline published by the Pensions Regulator here.
