Individuals who are considered to be extremely clinically vulnerable have been required to shield at various stages throughout the pandemic. The Government has now confirmed that, in England and Wales, people on the shielding list can begin to follow national restrictions alongside the rest of the population from 1 April 2021, although they are still advised to take extra precautions to keep themselves safe from coronavirus.
Public Health England has issued a letter sent to those who have previously fallen into the shielding category. A copy of the letter can be found here.
In relation to employment, the importance of this is that shielders should be treated in the same way as other individuals, meaning that they should work from home where possible but, if they cannot work from home, they should go to work. Shielders will no longer be eligible for SSP or similar benefits as a result of being advised to shield.
