November is pancreatic cancer awareness month and today, Thursday 19 November, is World Pancreatic Cancer day. As part of our ongoing support of our charity partners, Pancreatic Cancer Action Scotland (PCAS), we are sharing this update to help raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.

One of our support initiatives this year has been to host an online charity auction, giving everyone the opportunity to participate from home. We have over 200 items available in our auction, with something to suit all budgets. The online auction can be accessed here and bidding closes at 10PM today!

Sadly, pancreatic cancer has the lowest 5-year survival rate of any of the 22 common cancers. The 5-year survival rate is just 7.9%. Early diagnosis is achievable though and survival is possible. Knowing the symptoms of pancreatic cancer could save a life. The symptoms are as follows:

  • Jaundice – Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes, and/or very itchy skin.
  • Upper abdominal pain or discomfort which may radiate to the back.
  • Mid back pain or discomfort where a bra strap would sit and may be eased by leaning forward.
  • Pale and smelly stools that don’t flush easily.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Indigestion, not responding to medication.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • New onset diabetes, not associated with weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Change in bowel habits
  • Unexplained weight loss

Often if you are experiencing these symptoms, the cause is not cancer. But if you have persistent or worsening symptoms that are not usual for you then you should visit your GP or call NHS to investigate. Find out more about the symptoms of pancreatic cancer here.
