As previously reported, all companies in Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) with more than 250 employees are now required to annually publish how big the pay gap is between male and female employees to the Government, with the first deadline for reporting being today, 4 April 2018. It is worth remembering that, when thinking about ‘headcount’ for gender pay gap reporting, a wider definition of employee is used here, meaning that workers are included, as well as some self-employed people. Agency workers are also included, but only count towards the figures of the agency providing them to the end user.

The full pay report information must be published on each employer’s website every year, and must be retained there for a period of at least three years. Employers must also upload the information to the government, and can register to do so here: https://www.gov.uk/report-gender-pay-gap-data .

The published report requires to address specific areas and may generally explain the reasons for the results and give details about actions that are being taken to reduce or eliminate the gender pay gap.

To help employers, the Government Equalities Office and Acas have produced helpful guidance on the obligation, which can be accessed here: http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=5768
