New legislation has just come into force which extends the entitlement to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) to those who are told to self-isolate as a result of the new ‘Track and Trace’ systems being rolled out across the UK.
Although each UK nation will have its own version of the ‘Track and Trace’ system, they each involve the relevant authorities contacting anyone who tests positive with coronavirus to ask who they have had contact with and then informing those traced contacts that they are to self-isolate for 14 days from the date of contact.
As we previously advised, those with coronavirus symptoms were already entitled to receive SSP whilst they were self-isolating, but this new legislation extends this entitlement to those who have been instructed to self-isolate as a result of being in contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus, whether they themselves have symptoms or not. The entitlement to SSP in either case applies from the first day of absence.
If you would like to discuss this development, or you require support or advice on any other employment law matters, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the team on 0141 331 5150.
