As the year draws to a close, we look back at some of the key developments in employment law this year.

Protection for zero hour contract workers

The Exclusivity Terms in Zero Hours Contracts (Redress) Regulations 2015 came into force on 11 January 2016.

Modern Slavery Act 2015

The Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires that employers operating in the UK, with a global turnover of £36 million or more, must publish a slavery and human trafficking statement each financial year.

National Living Wage

The National Living Wage came into force on 1 April 2016. The National Living Wage is a higher rate of the National Minimum Wage, and applies to all workers aged 25 and over. The rate is currently set at £7.20 per hour.

Penalties for unpaid Tribunal awards

From 6 April 2016, the Government introduced a new scheme to penalise employers who failed to pay Tribunal awards or ACAS-conciliated settlement sums.

State second pension

From 6 April 2016, a single tier state pension replaced the current two state pension elements, ie the basic pension and the Second State Pension (S2P).
